Extended Workshops for Teachers

Using CPA for Lesson Design

This workshop provides teachers with an understanding of using the Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract approach to lesson design. It will show the progression from concrete to abstract, with appropriate links to develop understanding of concepts and processes for primary school pupils. Examples will be taken from whole numbers, fractions and geometry.

Topics include

  • The theoretical basis of the CPA approach
  • What constitutes C and P aspects of a concept/process in mathematics
  • Designing a unit of lessons based on the CPA approach (Participants to work on different topics in small groups)

The WHYs of Geometry Topics in Primary School

This workshop provides teachers with the knowledge of using logical reasoning to justify various results in primary school geometry.

It enables teachers to

  • Understand the context of school geometry and the position of primary geometry results within the overall geometry curriculum
  • Understand the Euclidean approach in building a structure of geometrical results
  • Apply basic axioms of geometry to prove geometrical results learned by their pupils

4 hours (2 sessions of 2 hours)

Minimum of 20 teachers

$20 per teacher per hour

Understanding Fractions

This workshop provides teachers with an understanding of the various concepts of fractions and the relationships between various sub-topics within the fractions topic as well as relationships of the topic factions with other arithmetic topics.

Session 1

  • The five concepts of fractions
  • Fractions as rational numbers within the context of the real number system
  • Equivalent fractions and operations on fractions – mathematical explanations

Session 2

  • Relationships between the topic and other arithmetic/algebra topics
  • Progression through the primary levels
  • Representations of fractions and appropriate use of manipulatives
  • Application to lesson planning

6 hours (3 sessions of 2 hours)

Minimum of 20 teachers

Geometric Thinking

This workshop aims to equip primary school teachers with a deeper understanding of concepts in geometry, through approaches that are both rigorous and exploratory in nature. Participants will gain fuller understanding of fundamental geometrical concepts in primary school mathematics and beyond.

6 hours (3 sessions of 2 hours)

Minimum of 20 teachers

$20 per teacher per hour

Number Sense

This workshop aims to provide primary school teachers with a firm foundation in numbers. Higher mathematics will be used to help teachers better understand the ‘big ideas’ in number structures and the computational algorithms taught in the mathematics curriculum.
